Our Story

A rare tale began when Sumba’s ancestors, the ‘Marapu’ landed on its secluded beach centuries ago. Since then, the same beach has attracted surf lovers around the world in search of the perfect wave. Soon NIHI emerged as a collective vision to preserve the purity and magnificence of Sumba.

Ten years into our journey, NIHI is a collection of off-script experiences with purpose in destinations at the Edge of Wildness – earning The World’s Best Resort accolade two years in a row.

Our Costa Rican dream was realized only after the serendipitous discovery of Santo Tomás – an overwhelmingly rural and off-grid destination that holds the innate qualities of NIHI with its unique character, people and beauty.

Our NIHI Santo Tomás journey started with an ambition to find a place in Costa Rica that was large, natural and untouched in every way, had world class surfing, a horse culture, polo, waterfalls, white sand beaches that are safe to swim, fishing, diving, bird watching, flora and fauna and wild nature.

Pioneers of honest hospitality, NIHI owns and operates hotels and resorts that weave leisurely comforts with the legends of places with spirit, and become the participants of our communities’ tales by empowering their welfare and advancement.

Santo Tomás’ community will be the centre of the NIHI Santo Tomás Foundation philanthropic interest and efforts, revolving around the people of El Triunfo and their wellbeing; a permaculture farm, hotel training school and preservations of the Conservation Area of Guanacaste, a World Heritage Site.

We want owners and guests to feel connected and able to give back. To go beyond and be a part of something larger than themselves. Through highly customized activities and personal itineraries, our guests experience compelling moments that inspire and ultimately create a charitable impact.
